Early 30's exhaust bits.

Post by Tony Fearn »

First of all, and nothing to do with exhausts, I'd like to commend to the members the numerous photos of the Australian Jowett Rally that have been published on this website through links from postings - they have added an extra dimension to the written word. Now then:- I was in need of a new tailpipe for my 1934 short saloon - see avatar image @ left - at the beginning of the week. The existing tail pipe (which unfortunately went under rather than over the back axle) disintegrated after traversing a rather large pothole in the main thoroughfare of my home town due to super-oscillation of the aforesaid axle. So, a quick phone call to Ian (Priestley), and as he'd had experience of needing a pre-war exhaust system in the past, he suggested I buy a Morris Minor/Traveller tailpipe as this could be made to fit. I found a supplier within 20 miles and went to have a look. The Morris tail pipe looked like it would fit. Unfortunately it was welded to the rest of the exhaust system and didn't come separately, so the whole system was about 10 feet long, so beware if you're going for one, take a hacksaw - (I didn't). Nevertheless I bought a complete system (£29.95), bent it in half around a convenient lamp-post and brought it home. Now I have a new exhaust with a tailpipe which goes over the back axle as it should. Hope this is of some help. Regards, Tony.

That's a useful bit of info, Tony - is the pipe also the correct diameter? The tail section on my Kingfisher has been replaced with stainless so I'm a bit loath to change it, but although as you mention, it correctly bends over the top of the rear axle it looks slightly larger in section than original.
Does anyone know if this affects performance at all?

prewar exhausts

Hi Ken, Don't know much about the physics etc of exhaust pipe diameter, back pressures, scavenging and all those other terms, but I gave her a 20 mile run yesterday and it seems to work ok, sounding just like a 907cc flat-twin should. I remember that when I had "Dolly" the 1927 Long Two, the silencer and tail pipe were from a Citroen 2CV with a much narrower pipe diameter, and this didn't seem to affect the performance. Some years ago I followed a fabric-bodied 'Grey Knight' on a scenic run which had a tailpipe diameter slightly larger than a Biro and that went very well and sounded great. So make of it what you will. Perhaps someone with the relevant knowledge will join the discussion. If you've got a stainless part already fitted, I'd leave well alone. Looking forward to seeing you at the end of May. Tony.
