Wheels, rims, cracks etc.

Post by Keith Clements »

I often get asked whether new wheels are available, mainly by people interested in competition. Has anybody had any made or converted others to fit? I have had three sets made or modified, SAAB 15inch with redrilled centres (I have the jig), complete new centres on 16inch rims, and band set to widen rim in another set. Plus on one set I welded up all the normal crack spots (hub cap studs, holes on jup). I know others have modified VW Beatle.

Apparently JCS made some a few years back. Mike Smailes had a set. Could we get more made?

Cracked wheels

Post by Srenner »

Hello all:

I have been racing 758 for 16 years now, two to three times a year, plus some street driving. Based on KC's and others experiences, way back in 1991 I had the wheels disassembled, trued, reassembled by welding all the mating areas and welded over the stamped "creases" at the hub cap mounting nubs.

At the Wine Country event in early June, I cracked three rims in the morning session. Managed to get them welded (TIG) and made it through the weekend with only one cracking back through the weld. In the last three years, I have cracked a total of seven wheels.

While I now have a number of wheels ex-Ted Miller, I think it downright stupid to continue to break them.

I have spoken to a mechanical engineer and a couple of well-respected fabricators about a "fix". I will do one of the solutions to get through the Monterey Historic in mid-August, but believe it is time to re-manufacture wheels.

While I understand that none of want to spend vast sums of money to keep our cars on the road, the fate of the marque rests on our ability to keep it in the public eye (please read the post in the Javelin section on the recent car show in Yorkshire.) Out of sight, out of mind.

I feel that racing mine gives a small amount of visibility to an otherwise oblivious US vintage car crowd. Racing 758 stresses various components, thus my need to find a solution.

In this growing era of globalized industry, we should be able to find a way to faithfully reproduce needed items.
