Banjo bolt threads

Post by Chris Cole »

David Morris and I have been using different solid and flexible oil pipe. This is the one that comes out of the rear timing cover and goes back in agin. This is held by two banjo bolts. My measurements make the bolt to be 5/8" diameter and 22 TPI. I cannot find this listed anywhere under any thread standard. Is it a special? If I wnated another bolt is it a case of making one? This is for interest only! I still have the two bolts.

Dunno. Have you checked BSP? I know BSB (British Standard Brass) is 26 tpi in all sizes - curious, but no help here.

Do let us (all) know when you find out.

Good luck!

Chris, you too have probably done this exercise, but somewhere in the deep recesses of my old mind I had the idea that the threads used on the banjo bolts of our cars were a "standard" but obscure set up . . . so with this in mind I had a read of, and did a search for appropriate words in my digital version of "Machinery's Handbook" (one of the favourite references of engineers!). Lots of 5/8s and 22s turned up, but unfortunately not together . . . and NO reference is made to banjos!

I also referred to my ancient "Kemps Engineer's Year Book", using all imaginable criteria, but there was nothing pertaining to banjo bolts and/or their threads . . . So there you are, sounds like they are "special" !!

I also checked to see that they weren't metric!

But, one important fact that I can positivity contribute, is that there were 2 sizes of banjo bolts used in Javelin and Jupiter engines . . . one was 1/2" in diameter and 22 TPI (early cars) and the later one of 5/8", also 22 TPI.

I hope this post has bought a little more light on the subject (perhaps about 2.5 Watts worth?)

Cheers, Leo
