Steering Wheels

Post by Srenner »

There are a few of us in the States needing steering wheels, so a steering wheel shop has been retained to make a mold and the first wheel should be ready by the end of April. The wheels come with a 10 year guarantee on workmanship.

With the small batch we are running, the price would be about US$300 each for a solid (ivory, tan or black). The cost of the marblized Bluemel style wheel would be a little more and will be determined after the first one is complete.

Anyone interested? Drop me a line.

Ref your steering wheel note. Are you you intending to make a steering wheel that imitates the Bluemel construction which is quite different from the std Javelin/Jupiter wheel or are you trying to replicate the original Jupiter wheel as supplied by the factory? If it is the latter, I will tell you my experiece to date with the Czechs. We have made and reconditioned steering wheels for all the different combinationsof spoke arrengements for javelin / jupiters using a almost colourless plastic ( Cost around A$200plus a$200 for paint job) At present we fettle them to a smooth finish prime them and paint either white or black. The Mottled version apparently is difficult from both the moulders and/or painters view point. The centre are of course original and there is a shortage of std Javelin wheels which are the same configuation and splined as per The Jupiter version I am staying with Mike Allfrey who has a Lancaster spares version paited in Grey and looks the business cost around A$400. I would certaimnlr be interested in a mottled version of javelin PD and Jupiter . best wishes Bill Lock

Steering Wheels

The wheels will not be made as Bluemel made them, which I have been told was an injection mold process.

The base material is a type of urethane. Color choice is open. The mottled or marble ones will be hand-painted, then the final processes finished. All wheel will be delivered in finished condition.

The three outstanding issues are:

1)Center hub color. The original wheels I have are sort of a pewter/silver-greyish, although one appears to be more of a bronze. Centers hubs could be painted to match the outer rim if one prefers.

2) The "pattern" of the mottled or marblized wheel and which shades of tan/brown/ivory to use. PICTURES PLEASE!

3) The actual cost of each wheel. Driven, of course, by the number of wheels made. The mottled wheels will be a little more, and I am trying to get a good number on that cost.
