Jowetts in Books

Post by Chris Spencer »

A little retail therapy this afternoon and a couple more books to my collection:

British Family Cars of the 50's & 60's - published by Shire Library ISBN 98-07478-0712-4 - (Baiscly the cars I grew up with - my step father had a taxi busness so besides the heavy fleet of Austin Cambrige & Morris Oxford were allsorts of strays in the fleet) - Needless to say on page 57 & 58 the Javelin is featured - with 2 images -don't know who's car is featured 'MYX 393' - it is in the chapter headed 'Cars for the better off' - Alltough only half page is devoted to the Javelin it is a well put together article. This great little book has lot's of my favourites in it and retails at £5.99 - 64 pages - packed with images most in colour and some great period shots - softback - I found it in WH Smiths.

I also purchased 'The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Extraordinary Automobiles' - which again carries lots of my favourites - and how could they miss the Jupiter R4 out ? - They didn't - it is featured on pages 138 /139 with a full period image to one page - nicely laid out and very informative - 150 vehicles - 360 pages - lots of images - some colour - hardback - published by Dorling Kinsley - ISBN 978-1-40533695-6 -retails at £12.99 - also found in WH Smiths.

To make my daily 70-mile round trip commute more bearable, I use the time to listen to audio books. The book I am listening to currently is "The Outsider: My Life in Intrigue" by Frederick Forsyth, published in 2015 which is a sort of autobiography but covering selected events in his life. Thus I was interested to hear about a ride that he had in a clapped-out Jowett Javelin that took place in Hong Kong back in the mid 1970's. His remarks were not particularly kind about the car, but nevertheless any mention is better than none.

Relatively brief mention though it was, I can thoroughly recommend this book.
