1952 Deluxe Dash

Post by DaJester »

Hi Guys,

I need an Adult....

My 1952 Deluxe seems to currently be sporting 2 ignition switches (setup in series), along with the push start. It has both the standard ignition assembly, and the PCL6 light switch with key. The dash is the single piece top, which when I'm finished with it, will have the trafficator timer incorporated. Of all the images I can locate, it seems to have the standard ignition assembly, and a PCL 6 light switch without the key.

Anyone have any images I can have a look at, or know of the part number to the PCL6 without key barrel?

Figured I would correct this, while i am restoring the dash.

Please post an image of what you have. Use Upload attachment tab below post reply message box. There should be a load of images in the Gallery of Javelin dashboards!

This is my dash currently in pieces

These are the 2 ignitions

As you can see, the Dash lacks a few things like an oil pressure light, ignition warning light. Should probably have one for the Trafficators as well. The car does have a column mounted indicator stalk with light incorporated into the end of the stalk.

I think the best way to go about this would be to keep the PCL6 switch as is, and remove the standalone ignition barrel, relocate the push start button to the bottom left (was top left) and fill in the top left hole prior to re-veneering. This way I can rewire it according to the wiring diagram for the Deluxe 1952. My speedo does actually incorporate the Ignition Warning light. So the only thing i need to add to the dash is the Trafficator Flashing light, and Low Oil Pressure Warning light (which will require a sensor added to the motor).

The Instruction manual shows how the early car should be. You need to be a club member to view this.

As witnessed by the smooth top and speedo placement, all the wood parts shown in the photos appear to be for the last type of wooden dashboard rather than the earlier one that is shown in Keith's link to the instruction manual. However someone has modded it to include the plastic early type light switch rather than the later chrome item which does not include a key facility. Hence the bigger hole in the centre of the dash. A clue would be if the hole looks home made on the back. Unless of course, someone can say that Jowetts used up the plastic switches on the very early editions of the late dash! A chassis number would be useful.

i would say the PCL6 was not original, judging by Keiths post and by how the center hole seems like it had something there previously then enlarged (evidence of screw holes.
Chassis Number is E2 PD20701D

The parts book for the PD shows the Javelin requiring Lucas part PRS3, combined light and ignition, for the standard car and Light switch PRS5 and Ignition switch S45 for the de-luxe.
The PRS5 has four positions- off, side, head, fog

Thanks for the chassis number - you appear to be firmly into the era of the second style of wooden dashboard. From your photographs, perhaps the top has been partly repaired already - I would expect a hole in the middle for the flasher switch. In some respects you are better off without this because if the clock work mechanism is still working it will turn off the flashers far to quickly to be of use in modern traffic. The PRS5 would be the chrome switch I refer to in my previous posting. I can see the screw holes in your last photo. It was fitted to many "executive" cars including Jaguars so it is widely available at a wide range of prices too! I think not all had a fog lamp position though (which probably means that the part numbers were different). In Jaguars there was a smart plastic disc with the switch positions marked on it, rather than the metal ones of the Javelin era which unless you are lucky tend to look a bit age weary. The 1953 Javelins had a main beam warning light above and between the top centre gauges of the right hand dash section. It was probably one of the last changes to the dashboard and as far as I am aware not found on the 1952 model with the same dash layout. In the UK a main beam warning light did not become a legal requirement until well into the 60s and is still not required if never fitted, though this upsets the MOT testers no end. Only small, it looked like a pea bulb, but I think was actually just a bit of plastic rod, lit by the usual screw thread bulb behind. It would be easy to make up a similar arrangement if this is not present and perhaps a similar one for flasher warning. Not sure why one would want an oil pressure light if a gauge is fitted, but I suppose that is a personal choice.

Your interest in the forum: Have long had an interest in classic cars and have owned, maintained, improved and driven a 1971 MGB for the last six years. Now about to sell that, as I have just bought a 1953 Jowett Javelin - a car that I have long wished to own, being the first of my father's cars that I have any memory of.
Hope to use the forum for technical advice, general information and making contact with other Javelin owners. Intend to join JCCUK.

Here is a photo of the later deluxe dash layout, showing the correct type of lighting switch and the main beam warning light above the oil and water temp gauges.
On my own Javelin, the (red) warning light illuminates when the headlights are on dipped beam, but shines brighter when the headlights are switched to main beam.
I can confirm that the clockwork trafficator control, though a nice period feature, does turn off rather too quickly.

Nick, The top part has been repair, I have recently done this, and still in the process of finishing off adding the timing mech for the trafficators. As previously mentioned, the car had a stalk added to the steering column to modernize the car. The timing mech will be readded to purely use the Trafficators only. I've ended up removing the ignition barrel and rewired the car so it all all running off the Light/ignition switch in the center. If i get my hands on a good condition PRS5, I might switch it back. Wiring was all over the place and many loose wires under the dash have now been identified and reconnected.

I agree the Low Oil Pressure light isnt a necessity with the Oil Gauge fitted, the 1950 wiring diagram does have one for the oil unit, which i am assuming is the oil cooler. I havent located a 1952 wiring diagram as of yet, and have used a combination of the 1950 wiring diagram and the PB Jav Deluxe wiring diagram (as this one had the ammeter included. I think at the very least, i will add a High Beam and indicator lights (for the trafficators) to the dash.

I've also had to disassemble all the lock cores and recode them to match the ignition key. It seemed that all locks required a separate key, which was somewhat annoying.

Hi Robert, I have now added you to the Australian club membership list so that you can see the referenced documents in my post and thus will have the wiring diagram.
Sorry for the delay but I needed confirmation from Neil Hood.

Keith,

I have noticed, when registering for services like First Aid, it tells me my membership expires on the 31st Dec 2016. Not sure if that needs an update, or just a website thing
