Competition and picture gallery

Pictures are starting to be uploaded here.
TOPIC Image

If you haven't heard already, the club won a Best Stand AND a Best Car award! Just slightly better than the previous 3 years....

Click on the thumbnail above of almost all the parts for a Javelin that were installed into the freshly painted shell during the event.
Also on the stand was a Javelin seat being upholstered, a Bradford engine being rebuilt from all its component parts and started before the end of the show, the racing Jupiter, and the beautiful 1913 tiller steered Jowett that won best car award.

The Restoration Show 2017 album is best viewed using the Gallery Slideshow facility that you start by clicking on the 'album actions' drop down menu and scroll to second to the bottom to click on the 'View Slideshow'. Just sit back and enjoy and count how many Jowett members assisted on the stand. There will be a prize awarded at the Jowett Annual Weekend in May for the first to get the correct answer. Entries by email to the webmaster using the form on https://jowett.net/services/account/Contact.php
Note only those in brown or white Jowett overalls or coats count.

Preparation and the reveal.

For those wanting to know what went into just one of the exhibits on the stand please read this post for what was done on the body. We tried to keep its appearance secret from Peter as a surprise AND SUCCEEDED.

Chris thought he might have to call the medics to get Peter over the shock!

Many came to the stand and asked if it was the same car that had been at the show previously. It has made four appearances and was a major part of winning a best stand award each time. Read the whole topic for the whole story!

Prior to the story of that part of the history which started in February 2017, I had been working on making sure all the mechanicals were refurbished. A few technical days were spent doing the steering box and this post describes some of what was done to the rest.

The day before the show we loaded the cars (Sharon, Bill and Keith's) and van to their absolute limits. Bill had loaded his with the engine, gearbox, exhaust system, spare wheel carrier and workmate.

Chris has a topic on the Early Javelin Rebuild on another forum which is edited here to complete the story both of the resto show and the Early Javelin Rebuild saga in the Javelin Section of JowettTalk which contains the build up for the event. All images can be seen in higher resolution in the TOPIC Gallery. We pick up the story the day before the show.

How can you fit the tyres the next day without marking the paint?
I used a very fast hardener with a anti scratch lacquer on the wheel rims (I also advised the tyre fitter where I would be sticking his torque wrench - ratchet end first if he marked the rims ) - They are used to me and know to do my stuff with kid gloves. Anti scratch is good stuff and all major automotive paint brands have it their product range it's a 2 pack product - but have to be on your toes with it to the extent that if you put it on and leave it for too long before polishing it's bl**dy hard work to flat / polish has it is doing what it says on the tin - I have a couple of tricks / recommendations - so for engine bays / wheel rims / boot areas / underside of panels etc I use the anti scratch with a fast / super fast hardener / activator (you can now get an accelerator to get it to cure super quick but I would not recommend using this on large paint areas) - this gives me the flexibility to handle the painted areas / fit them up / mask them up / flat & polish within a few hours depending on air temperature at the time of painting - For jobs where I need the time & flexibility to flat & polish several panels I use a slow hardener / activator - this gives me roughly 24 / 36 hours of time that I can work the lacquer to a standard of finish that I am happy with be it a high gloss or sometimes clients want a more used / lived in / used look to the finish - the range of products available today and the flexibility of them from when I started some 40 years ago is truly astonishing
Mar 29, 2017
Sort of getting there - Stage 4 polished / detailed & some minor touching in of bolt heads etc

ImageImage
Loosely fitted the metal interior trims has this is the best way to transport them without them getting damaged
Image
Spent a bit of time gathering the gear together - loads of parts wrapped & labelled
Image
Mar 30, 2017
So - waxed up first thing yesterday
ImageImageImage
Image
Collect Luton tail lift hire van - detour to SWMBO studio and collect all her stuff for the stand
ImageImage
(40mm waste pipe explanation via photo once I have the stand set up)

Then to squeeze a Jowett Javelin into the back of a Luton van (all by myself as well)
Image

It's all a JUST fit !!

Loaded her car up with an industrial sewing machine and loads more stuff + 2 wheels off the Javelin + front & rear windscreens - part ironed / packed our stuff for the stay and went to bed at 01.00 this morning - back up at 05.00 - packed the rest of gear and just about ready to leave so a little after 09.00 traffic dependant we will be joining the fun & games of the NEC cattle market - I will try to post whilst at the show - but I know that I will be flat out and that internet connections are crap both at the NEC & hotel so please excuse me if it goes quiet for a few days - will take loads of pics and upload upon return - If you are at the show by all means pop past the stand and say hello - Hall 11 - stand 610 - Jowett Car Club, Cheers - Chris
Image
I jerry rigged this winch which did the job
Apr 3, 2017
So a early start last Thursday morning and we were at the NEC a little after 9.00 - one Luton van, 2 display cars on trailers from separate ends of the country, 4 largish estate cars stuffed with engines, parts & tools & equipment and a large van with the display / media boards boards again all from separate ends of the country then we could start to put the stand together which takes the entire day
Image
Image
The Javelin shell ready for assembly
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
The worlds oldest surviving Jowett - 1913 Jowett Tiller - (Note the tiller steering) - twin cylinder, horizontally opposed water cooled 6.5 HP engine - very much advanced for it's years - and amazingly it is no sloth - it can motor! - it is also in my eyes a very, very nice car
Image
1952 Jowett Jupiter race car - actively campaigned over the last few years in classic racing and finished 9th at the LeMans classic last year - when you consider the large engined cars of several litres that this little 1500cc boxer engined car is up against - it's doing very well
ImageImageImage
Layout ready assembly - the plan being just to do what we can - no race to finish the car but to get the drive train assembled and installed and whatever else can be done
Image
Meanwhile a couple of my fellow members commence putting a 1948 Jowett Bradford engine together from component form - twin cylinder horizontally opposed, water cooled - 17 HP (white metal bearing rods)
ImageImage
SWMBO - commences to put together / reupholster a Jowett Javelin front bench seat
ImageImageImage
Flocks of show attendees & public - led to a very, very busy stand
ImageImage

Things starting to happen
ImageImage
Front suspension on and the rear axle in
ImageImageImage
Parts layout starting to dwindle
ImageImage
Bradford engine progress with cylinders on
Image
Saturday night arrives and we are invited to attended the National Car Club Awards held within the NEC complex - which results in collecting the award for 'Best Stand in Show' (large over 75 sq metre) This is a huge accolade for our club which is quite small at circa 500 members when compared the other more corporate type clubs that have several thousand + members, along with retained staff and large budgets - all of our efforts rely on the goodwill of voluntary members and on a very tight budget of few hundred quid that we have to raise ourselves in the first place - The awards were hosted / presented by Mike Brewer (who in a non TV role is actually a nice bloke) What makes this award very special for our club is that it is our fourth consecutive win - and to beat the larger clubs at their own game is no mean feat !
Image
Then to our surprise comes the icing on the cake when the 1913 Jowett Tiller picks up the award for 'The Best Restored Car' in the show - beating over 1,000 other cars !

We left the awards evening somewhat very, very happy - whilst it is all about taking part for us - to be recognised for our efforts has a small car club is something very special

Meanwhile

Engine & box going in
ImageImage
More progress with the Bradford engine rebuild
ImageImage
Which is started & test run for a brief period in order to prove the build (to much cheering & applause as it started)

Image
Javelin engine fitted & the car back on it's wheels
Image
Dash & steering / column change going back together

Sunday evening comes quickly and time for the big load & pack up
Image
Arrived home at 11 last night and I am very much wiped when I arose this morning - now have to go and deliver the Javelin to one of my fellow club members where the car will continue to be fitted up - needless to say the owner of the car Peter (who flew in from Switzerland for the show) and had no idea that I had got the car painted was pretty much floored when it came out of the back of the van
Image
Many thanks all - your comments are very much appreciated - it just goes to show that with some applied thought / forward thinking, a little planning and a go for it attitude that the big boys can be beaten at their own game - as a small club (circa 500 members) we are judged in the same group as clubs that have thousands of members, disposable income, salaried staff and all the resources that go with it - it's not the winning but the taking part for us - the winning is just the icing on the cake - For me to see the team at the show working together, problem solving, having a laugh and viewing the camaraderie amongst them is just reward for me - I am still aching and will probably be on a go slow for the rest of the week - I couldn't do this every week !

The Javelin is now back with one of my fellow Jowett Car Club members who has a little bit more space than me

The story continues here.
