Hi all,
How often do you check the level of the brake fluid in your master cylinder? I know mine was checked less often that it should be, as the metal cap seemed to weld itself to the can.
I forget where I first noticed them, probably while wandering around a rally field somewhere, but there are plastic extensions that screw onto the top of the master cylinder. Once on, they can be left there for ever. The plastic extension is about one and a half inches high, with a plastic screw lid. You add fluid until the level can easily be seen in the plastic extension.
The real gain in fitting one of these is that it is the first thing that catches your eye when raising the bonnet. With a quick glance you have checked your brake fluid level, which is a must with our single circuit system. I purchased mine from a rally stall and it was around £10, which is a bargain in terms of safety. I have noticed they are now on eBay ( item no. 301355841208 ), although the price here has risen a bit.
Having driven a Javelin ( not mine, but one that had just passed it's MOT! ) where we experienced total brake failure, it was a salutary lesson! In this case, the short low pressure rubber pipe from the end of the copper tube from brake reservoir to the master cylinder has ruptured and all the fluid has escaped.
So, if you feel it's a good idea, I can recommend these extensions. I trust concours judges would not deduct points, for something that is such a sound safety addition?
All the best,
David

Re: Brake master cylinder extension
Opps! I should have made it clear that these extensions screw onto the top of the master cylinder RESERVIOR can fixed to the inner wing top, obviously not the master cylinder!
