Curborough Sprint and memories of 1988

Post by Keith Clements »

Thanks to Richard Gane for organising a great day at the circuit where 3 Javelins and 5 Jupiters attended and had a go at the sprint.
There was almost a reunion of all the 1988 Marathon competitors with Mike Smailes, Frank Wooley, Bill Lock and Keith Clements there. Curborough was used as a test prior to that event. There are plans for a celebration next year to mark Jowett Sport's initiation into international rallying, perhaps even driving the route from Tower Bridge to Cortina, stopping off at the Jowett Rally in Switzerland in September 2018.

The TOPIC JowettGallery has a video of Curborough so that you can compare Richard's racing SA with Amy's standard SC.

Those who attended please send me any images you would like adding to the Gallery.

Richard Gane has fitted a new engine to his leMans car and reduced the width if the rear wings to make the car a bit narrower and slippery through air at the rear
The alterations are quite subtle but they improve the car looks.
To test the engine and to run it in he hired Curborough circuit in Lichfield for the day and generously invited all JCC and JOAC members to bring their cars to try round the track.
We had a fantastic track day trying out each other's cars apart from Jupiters there were several moderns but Richards car certainly performs very well compared to the moderns even .
Curborough is a really difficult circuit because it's short and shaped like a treble clef so you have a sharp left then a curve to the right a 90 degree turn to the left and that is followed immediately by a 90 degree right turn and the Tarmac on this final turn was a bit loose so we saw a few dancing cars
There was quite a big turnout as members from both clubs arrived and with a masters touch at hospitality Richard had laid on roast pig and roast turkey sandwiches with gherkin and cold slaw and piping hot coffee.
Richard had his mechanic on the track with him so we were able to ask advice about anything and Richard gave lifts or let most of the members drive his car .
The new engine proved to be performing very well so David Mason presented Richard with the Jack Mitchell Trophy which he had won for the second time, the Westfield and the Vauxhall /lotus obviously didn't get prizes but provided good entertainment and left lots of rubber on the track, Keith Clements in Amy's Jupiter and John Chevers Jupiters.
also performed well and a Javelin didn't look out of place on the track . The general consensus was when are we having our next track day .
Tom Chapman

We made a short video which Keith will publish in the forum

Hi Keith for the forum.

Many thanks Richard for the opportunity to experience the exhilaration of a few minutes in the cockpit of what must be the fastest Jowett ever. I feel lucky to have lived to experience a Jowett developed to a degree that it is really competitive with other contemporary Marques. Congratulations to Richard iand his team for a job well done,

Bill Lock
