Pre War headlights

Post by BarryCambs »

Our Long Two is currently fitted with a miss matched pair of Lucas headlamps which have been butchered by drilling the swivels off to fit the cast supports on the car. I've always assumed there must have been a specific but rare Lucas model made to fit the uprights and have been keeping an eye out for some. However, now there is doubt in my mind, having seen these on ebay and looking to have the correct fitting. Could it be the originals were Rotax rather than lucas? Some of the some old photos of the car seem to show it with the lights on top of the wings, but I think the 1920s cars I've seen do have the cast cup mounts like ours.

According to research I did a while ago, JCL used Brolt electrical systems on their early models. Brolt Ltd of Oldbury, UK was formed in 1911 as a manufacturer of automotive electrical equipment, and initially supplied dynamos for aeroplane and motorcars through Brown Brothers. Brolt advertised reliable motorcar lighting dynamo systems, and by 1920 was able to exhibit at the Commercial Motor Exhibition at Olympia with electrical lighting equipment for commercial vehicles. By 1924 however, Brolt was in financial difficulties and offered its business to Joseph Lucas for about £50,000. This acquisition allowed Lucas to extend its original equipment business, particularly for commercial vehicles, as Brolt had original equipment supply contracts with several vehicle manufacturers, including Beardmore and Jowett.

Tony Fearn sent me a photo of an original Brolt electrical instrument switch panel on a vintage Jowett taken at the 2006 National Jowett Rally - I recently purchased a near identical one in Western Australia.

Did JCL use Brolt lights on the vintage cars, & were they actually branded as "BROLT" (SYSTEM) Brown Brothers Ltd London EC. When did JCL start using Lucas lights?

Regards,

Andrew

Thanks Andrew - thats an interesting bit of history.

A bit more digging and it does look as though Lucas did some "post mounted" lights. I guess they were just very uncomon which is why I'd not seen them before.

Hopefully I'll chance across some at some stage now I know what I am actually looking for.
