JOWETT RALLY TEWKESBURY 27 - 29 MAY 2016

Post by Tony Fearn »

As no-one has posted this, I thought I'd do it.

Most of the JCC members who take the Jowetteer magazine will have read Peter Holden's various 'Updates' on next year's 'RALLY BY THE RIVER' to be held at Puckrup Hall near Tewkesbury, next May from the 27th to the 29th.

I, and quite a few others have already booked into the hotel for the weekend, but for some, this will be quite a journey, especially if driving to it in a vintage or pre-war Jowett.

When we visited Bideford, in 2009, some of us broke our journey at a Travelodge near Longford, just above Gloucester, and we were a 'jolly party' .

So, as I reckon it will be a couple of hundred miles from Clayton-le-Moors to Tewkesbury, and that I hope to come in the 'Flying Fox', with an average speed of between 20 and 25 miles per hour, and on non-motorway roads, I have booked in at the Travelodge at Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury (SY3 0DA) to break the journey south, staying the night of the 26th May.

I'm hoping to use the A49 for much of the journey to Shrewsbury, and I know that there aren't many Jowetteers who will use this side of the country to get to Tewkesbury, but if you do, and wish to break your journey as well, then perhaps we might get together.

The night's stay, booked a couple of months ago cost £49, and today it was a flexible £54.

I have heard on the grape-vine, that there's been at least one more booking for the Shrewsbury Bayston Hill Travelodge on the night of 26th May 2016 (at which I will be staying to break my journey from Clayton le Moors to the National Rally at Tewkesbury), but no-one can tell me whom to expect. I look forward to being surprised.

I might add that on my return journey back 'up North' I have booked into the Shrewsbury Battlefield Travelodge for the night of 30th May, which will allow a leisurely departure from Puckrup Hall on the Monday morning, and an even more leisurely drive home.

As I write, having checked the Travelodge website tonight, Bayston Hill is £42 per night, and Battlefield is £31 per night for a double room.

Peter Holden wrote in the February Jowetteer Rally Update that I am staying in the Travelodge at Bayston Hill on the evening of the 26th May. This is correct. But it is a Thursday, not a Wednesday.

"Not stressing himself and his car, you understand, but travelling along the A49 from Warrington, and on the Wednesday night, 26th May he is staying in Shrewsbury at the Travelodge in Bayston Hill (SY3 0DA) just to the south of Shrewsbury".

I had a chat with Bob in Upton-on-Severn last night and he says that there are 80 rooms booked for the weekend.

This was in January.
Bill and Sandra have booked at Bayston Hill for the Thursday night as well.
I've had a look on the Travelodge website tonight and the price is now around £27 for Bayston Hill, so there's probably a sale on. I don't know whether it will last.
So wherever you're coming from to Tewkesbury, it shouldn't break the bank to stay overnight on the way down if you've a long way to go.
Of course there will be variations in the price at the different locations, but it's worth the consideration.

Well, since the last post was mine in February, I thought that I'd bring the topic to the top of the list again just in case someone wished to post something.
'Sarah Jane' is raring to go, so she says, so see you all (or some of you at least) in about 9 days time.
Have a safe journey.

Can't wait to see you all there! Alan, have you got a route, yet? I think I'm going A303, A37 to Bath, A46 Stroud, Cirencester, Gloucester, Chltenham then Tewkesbury (Ithink!) - I'm leaving the navigating to Levi!!

Hi Ken, this is the route I'm taking also to avoid Bristol! I believe its the similar route we took up to Wakefield, Do you want to arrange to meet up on route to convoy up? Give me a ring, I don't think I have your current number! Hopefully see your Friday!

Well didn't they do well.
What a great weekend from start to finish.
Couldn't fault anything except for a bit of long-term dust behind the bathroom door!

I second that, Tony - well done to all concerned: an excellent Rally and weather! We made it home in 2 hours less than the journey up! Levi and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend.

Here's a photo of the enigmatic Peter Holden who prides himself as never having been photographed at any of the numerous Rallies he's been to over the years.

Not any more!!
