Lucas dynamo and distributor 1929 long four

Post by Dhbangham »

It appears to be the original dynamo and distributor on my 1929 long four. The Lucas dynamo barrel has E418 AJER 529 stamped on it. I had the dynamo completely rebuilt by Paul from Smart Power in Redditch last year. He did a spectacular job, including rewind the armature, burning off the shellac insulation from the field winding and dipping in insulating resin before wrapping in traditional cloth. He then refurbished the three bush contact and rebuilt the voltage switch housed under the brass dome on top of the unit. He used sealed bearing in the rebuild.
It now charges correctly in summer and winter settings. Unfortunately, I had to replace the distributor gears this winter, so had the chance to photograph the process.

The voltage switch only allows current to flow to the battery, once an over voltage has been achieved. It is not a voltage regulator.

The replacement bronze helical gear from JCS had a different angle from the set found in my distributor, so I had some new ones made by Apple gears of Wellingborough. Unfortunately I did not ask for the bore to be made undersize for final fitting to the dynamo shaft. It turned out that my dynamo shaft had worn oval and I needed to turn it down, so making the gear a loose fit. I therefore had to bush the gear. I have three extra helical gears if anyone should need them.
