I thought I would at least do some planning for the Resto Show next week....and you guys and gals might help me by adding to the list.
First I went through Amy and my tools to make sure we had all the ones that we could possibly want to do the job.
Having had a few rehersals at the Technical weekend with Nigel Hicks' and Peter Tribble's cars it makes life a lot easier, but transporting my garage to the NEC is not an option.
The brake system has AF spanners and UNF threads as well as BSF so these needed to be added to Amy's kit.
The pipe flaring tools, brake bleed kit, clamps for cylinders and air compressor are things not normally taken in my 'rally' toolkit.
Also the hub puller and bearing clamp release tool might not be carried. Also a breaker bar was added as we do not know what condition the Practical Classic Javelin will be in.
Next I planned what we might do and this uncovered some more required tools.
NEC Brake work.
1 Car on stands. Check safety.
2 Pedal- hardness, travel, sponginess. Do not press too hard as we do not want cylinders to lock onto drums.
3 Handbrake-condition of handle and cable, ratchet mechanism worn, travel, release
4 Fluid reservoir-condition, cleanliness, fluid colour, cap sealing , leaks
5 Fluid delivery pipe- condition, especially rubber join.
6 Pedal -dust cover condition, travel, fouling and return, operation of brake light switch
7 Master cylinder- leaks, rubber condition, pipe condition, spring return, gap in slot.
8 Front offside- Pipe condition, flexihose, leaks, wheel cylinder condition, adjustment, force on pedal, free rotation
9 Front nearside-Pipe condition, flexihose, leaks, wheel cylinder condition, adjustment, force on pedal, free rotation
10 Rear nearside-Pipe condition, flexihose, leaks, wheel cylinder condition, adjustment, force on pedal, free rotation
11 Rear offside-Pipe condition, flexihose, leaks, wheel cylinder condition, adjustment, force on pedal, free rotation
12 Handbrake cable- front section, adjustment section, rear section,
13 Handbrake mechanism-angle of compensator, rods, cylinder mechanism free and returning
14 On all wheels check play on bearings.
15 Rear offside wheel hub- split pin, nut, washer, thread on puller, wheel nuts and stud condition, adjuster release, remove hub
16 Oil seal leak, brake shoe condition and correct placement, wear, brake spring condition and correct placement, wear on taper
17 Clamp cylinder, check operation, remove piston, check bore, clean
18 Rear nearside wheel hub- split pin, nut, washer, thread on puller, wheel nuts and stud condition, adjuster release, remove hub
19 Oil seal leak, brake shoe condition and correct placement, wear, brake spring condition and correct placement, wear on taper
20 Clamp cylinder, check operation, remove piston, check bore, clean
21 Front offside wheel hub- split pin, nut, washer, thread on puller, wheel nuts and stud condition, adjuster release, remove hub
22 Oil seal leak, brake shoe condition and correct placement, wear, brake spring condition and correct placement, wear on stub axle
23 Clamp cylinder, check operation, remove piston, check bore, clean
24 Front nearside wheel hub- split pin, nut, washer, thread on puller, wheel nuts and stud condition, adjuster release, remove hub
25 Oil seal leak, brake shoe condition and correct placement, wear, brake spring condition and correct placement, wear on stub axle
26 Clamp cylinder, check operation, remove piston, check bore, clean
27 If any cylinder or pipe, especially master cylinder, needs to be replaced then this is left until now.
28 System purge and refill, bleading and test.
29 Adjust pedal brakes
30 Adjust handbrake.
31 Sam and Neil roadtest.
If required or as an interlude, I have all the bits to rebuild a master cylinder at the show. The master cylinder on the car will be dismantled and examined anyhow as I do not believe any brake system left for more than 5 years with non-silicone fluid in it is going to be any good. Even with silicone in it I would check the master cylinder at least. Experence on even running Jowetts that are used just a few times a year shows many seized cylinders and scoured pistons and rubbers.

I will also check the brake shoe alignment, if I have time, to make sure they are running flat on the drum. But will not be able to fix if the backplate is worn or bent. We are not taking new shoes, bearings or oil seals.
This car may not have run since being attended to more than 20 years ago, so the shoes may never have been used. Care must be taken at every step as we do not know the condition or correctness of any part as it was in the process of rebuild.
If adjusters are also broken we may have a challenge.
We have no handbrake spares.
Of course, need to check drums for wear!

You obviously have a magic wand in your toolkit has the roadwheels have taken themselves off and put themselves back on - that is unless you have managed to completly restore the braking system with the roadwheels left on and in that case it must be a super power magic wand

Quite often take road wheels off with the drum.
