Adding pictures to the Gallery

There is some help on the Gallery itself and on Jowett.net 'Help ' page; but please add more if you think it will help others. See also the Gallery & Manuals section below.

I am fairly sure people with imacs have loaded pictures into JowettGallery. So let us start with a few checks.
You already have six pictures in your personal album. How were those loaded? Did I load them?

Moises Jnr, this is an easy guide that you probably do not need. :)

You have logged on and you should be on your personal album page....
IN THE LEFT PANEL THERE IS A BOX with 'album actions' in it. Click the arrow at the side of the box and a drop down menu appears.
Note to see the pictures below in more detail just click on them, and when you have seen what you want click the browser back arrow.

Move mouse to highlight 'add items ' in the list and click the mouse. This will bring up a new page called 'Add Items'
Stay on the tab labeled 'From Web Browser', do not click on the other tabs yet.

Click on the 'browse box' which should bring up a view of the folders on your computer.Find the file you want and select it. This should put the path to the file you want in the 'File' box.
Then click on the 'Add Items' box at the bottom of the page and the file should upload to the JowettGallery.

If this does not work then please contact me. There is a possibility that JowettGallery has problems with the Spanish character set.
Please also try loading a small file first. Gallery might have problems with ones larger than 1MB.
The error log is not showing any problems.
It is possible that cookies have been lost. Check your URL does not have 'GALLERYSID=TMP_SESSION_ID_DI_NOISSES_PMT' in it.

I have no problems loading pictures to the Gallery from a Mac. The problem likely lies elsewhere......

Perhaps it is not clear that you can only add items into your own personal album, unless you have special priviledges. Users can also add items in the Legacy section where you can put items you think need to be filed other than in your personal album, such as technical articles.

Speaking with John Dolphin yesterday at the AGM, he was disappointed that others had not added to his sterling efforts at adding publications on Jowetts to our archive. Come on guys start scanning!

On a similar note I spoke with Keith Wear who said that we could approach the West Yorkshire Archive to see if we can scan the club's paper archive and thus get them so we can all see what is there. It really needs someone close to Leeds (or can spend a day or two there) to contact them and select documents for putting in the electronic archive. Noel Stoke has mad a list of what is there so we should first publish that and select what we need as a priority list. The George Grandfield notes are where John Dolphin wants to start!

Resizing pictures

Post by Keith Clements »

The simplest way I find is to use the JowettGallery upload applet. You do this by selecting the 'upload applet' tab on the 'add items' menu selection in an album where you want to put the pictures. But make sure you tick the 'Resize pictures' box at the bottom of the applet screen.

This applet is downloaded to your browser so you may need to accept this loading when the security system kicks in.
The applet allows you to drag and drop or select files (or folders of files) when clicking the 'add items' button.

When you have added all the files you then click the ' upload button'. A progress bar tells you exactly what is happening. This method is easy and fast.

For those using Android phones the Regal Android app downloads pictures from your phone.

To link the items into your JowettTalk post follow this topic.

Of course, you can use the resize facilities on your computer before uploading them. Microsoft Paint, Windows Live Photo Gallery and most picture processing programs have such facilities.

What size you make them should depend on the subject matter and 'value' of the image. Archive material that has detail we do not want to lose should be sized to retain that detail. 10MB being the maximum. Generally, a 640 pixel maximum on the longest side is suitable, although going up to 1048 pixels adds detail that may be appropriate.

Most images will already be compressed but if they are not they should be compressed into jpg or png format. In exceptional cases a lossless compression (e,g. TIF) or RAW format can be stored so that the files can be further processed by Legacy curators. Most compression facilities allow you to choose the quality of compression and show the size of the resultant file. Some trial and error may be necessary to get a suitable compromise. Always look at the uploaded file to make sure it is how you want it to be.

Pdf items should also be similarly compressed before uploading unless they are to be further processed by Legacy curators. The aim should be to retain readability and reasonable quality in the images. Large or valuable documents should be split into sections and uploaded seperately.
