Allowing non-members to see items

There is some help on the Gallery itself and on Jowett.net 'Help ' page; but please add more if you think it will help others. See also the Gallery & Manuals section below.

Allowing non-members to see items

Post by Forumadmin »

If you want to allow non-members to view and comment on items then you can do this by putting items into an album to which you have added the permissions of 'Add comments' and 'View all Items'. See for detail on adding permissions for viewing all items and on how to add permission to allow comments from public. Note the latter may mean you have to moderate any abuse.

You can then move the items into the new album with the changed permissions or upload them into it. Doing the former you may have to change the permissions on the items themselves.

If you just change the permissions on individual items without creating an album then those items will clog up the explorer view in the left pane for the public that do not login to the Gallery.
Since many people will use the explorer view to find things they want you need to be clear and succinct in the way you name the album.

Public view of Gallery

Post by Keith Clements »

In order to clean up the public view of the Gallery home page I have created public albums in the personal albums of those people who made items in their albums viewable to the public and then moved any such albums or items into that album. This makes the explorer pane more ordered and less cluttered for those who have not logged on. If more people make items public then we may need to reorganise again. Note that anything you put into the public album should be viewable by the public unless you explicitly change the permissions.

This may well happen again once the Legacy project starts to order items in the technical and other sections and decides which items to make public. The joy of the Gallery is this is easy and does not lose any references to those items moved.
