http://jowett.net/Parts/Javelin-Jupiter ... alogue.htm
on Page 40 has the nut on the early rear axle as 10A-74-GB11
Anyone know what this thread should be? I presume it is UNF but I do not have a die of that size.
The threads on Peter's axle need some cleaning up and new nuts fitted.

Re: Early Rear axle nut
Hi Keith,
Sorry, I don't know what the thread is, but I presume the reference number is a Salisbury one? Perhaps we could find out from other sources/clubs that used the Salisbury axle? Seeing that the later, full hydraulic, axle has Jowett reference numbers for the shafts and nuts reminds me that someone mentioned that Jowett's are reputed to have bought-in the differential from Salisbury and manufactured their own axle tubes etc.?
Having had an early Javelin myself in the past, can I mention that the early half shafts, along with the tapers, Woodruff Keys and axle nuts, are really rather 'weedy' compared with the later full hydraulic axles. I had a key 'fret' in its slot ( which was a pain to put right ) and I found that the whole assembly needs a lot of care when tightening down. The later axles seem pretty bombproof in comparison. I suspect Jowett's found out the hard way and increased dimensions by at least 30% for the later axles.
All the best for the rebuild,
David

Thanks David,
Which is why I am paying some attention to the 'weedy' components that have suffered from abuse!

Re: Early Rear axle nut
After consulting all the thread tables I came to the conclusion that they should be 5/8 BSF although the new nuts I had, siezed after 3 turns. So the threads were carefully sorted with a die, gradually tightening the split die until the new nuts went on. I must admit I was aprehensive as I have no spare half shafts and seeing metal being removed from the damaged threads was disconcerting. Anyhow apart from the first couple of threads which are a bit 'loose' the rest of the thread is now OK.
