Pat is absolutely correct. I signed this petition some time ago. Another disturbing power is the ability of the police to seize vehicleswhich show up as uninsured on their database. Reports are rife about ordinary law-abiding folk having their cars taken from them at the roadside and being charged £105 plus a daily storage rate...often when the driver has phoned home and the partner is on the way with proof. In these cases the police should apologise, compensate the victim for lost time and expenses and deliver his car back to him, but no, they shift the blame on to the DVLA.
I tried to tax my Renault Fourgeonnette on-line but it was refused. The computer told me there was no record of my vehicle being insured......I was about 8 months into a fully comp term. I could have gone out in the morning and lost the old thing for a few days.
As well as becoming a state where we are spied on, I feel we are also on the way to becoming a state where the police can do as they wish with no regard to anyone else........and that's from an ex-police officer !

Road Pricing
I don't agree on how much we are taxed on fuel but all the ideas that have been suggested over the years as an alternative seem to me to even more unfair and more expensive to the motorist.
Pay as you go, we already have it you put your fuel in to do your journey. Taxes already paid, no waiting untill the end of the month for a bill, what about the people who run up a big bill and can't or won't pay, some dept set up to reclaim debts costing millions? to run and we all know how succesful these dept's are, CSA for example.
As for the size of your vehicle if you choose a small enviromtally friendly car you use less fuel and pay less tax If you choose a gas guzzler then you will be paying more.
Tracking devices, as well someone knowing your every move in the car (but i don't think it would take too long for something to be made for the unscrupulous to tamper with these) seem to me to be a nice big earner for some people, manufacturers,suppliers and OTHERS?
Simple, put in your fuel, pay your tax, do your journey, taxes paid NO BILL at the end of the month. on top of the fuel duty we have to tax our vehicle We dont't need more taxes for the motorist to try to help balance the books for the treasury or big brother watching our every move.
Has anyone wondered when the government has banned smoking where the money will come from to replace the millions of pounds? of revenue that will be lost from tobbaco taxes, will the motorist have to make this up as well?

The real problem is not one of distance ; but where you drive. I live in an area where you have to think about where you drive because of the conjestion charge, which has been a success!!! London has been given back to its inhabitants.
Many countries have toll roads; but Britain has only one (apart from bridges and tunnels). Driving on toll roads is usually a joy. I arrived an hour and a half early for an interview when using the M6 toll and it saved me gallons of petrol. We perhaps should look at the positives of have tracking devices embedded in cars:
less crime;
if you forget where you parked it;
and very likely in 20 years no steering required on motorways.
Hopefully, the devices will only be fitted if you need to go into conjested areas and then there will be a way for temporary devices such as Radio Frequency Identity Devices that you could buy. These are used in many countries already.
There is so much car crime in this country that we do need to have a way of detecting vehicles. Every car should have a Tracker. Perhaps they will also fit them to people so that we can track all the illegal workers and open prisoners. Also fit a disabling device!!!!
I am happy for the linking of DVLA, MOT, Insurance and Traffic Offences mainly because it is a lot fairer and efficient. Mind you won't it take the fun out of life?..No speed cameras..
The problem is who has access to the information such that each agency only has the information they need.
If they do stop me enjoying my Jowetts; then I will emigrate!

Easy way to get round all this....lots of people in more disreputable areas of Manchester do it........Buy a £100 grey micra. When you are next away from home jot down the numbers of similar cars and clone yours.
Drive carefully, try not to park on the road and you should be OK. No worries about speed cameras...some poor sod at the other end of the country will get the tickets! No trouble getting number plates, you can always get them on line or find a friendly shop . If you have a bump give a false identity or run away. Easy, isn't it. Don't try it with a Jowett though.
Official caution....This may be illegal !

Some of this makes sense, most of it does not. If we have a show of hands in the faith of the government to purchase, install commission and operate a computer system that would be needed for such a Big Brother scheme, I guess we will not see too many hands! I find it hard to believe that Keith's trip up the M6 toll saved him gallons of fuel (he would need to save at least 1 just to cover the £4.00 toll). HGV's have had tachographs etc for years and have they solved the problems of drivers at the wheel for hours too long, stow away immigrants, drug cargos etc. NO! This is another revenue raising plan from this government who are daily clamping down on personal liberty. They are rolling this under the popularist guise of congestion elimination when what they are actually trying to do is to keep track of you. We would all vote for an end to congestion I'm sure, but before we do we need to be very aware of what get instead.
Most congestion is caused by people who need to get from A to B at a certain time. The introduction of congestion charges will mean that they still need to do the commute as there is no alternative. All they will end up doing is paying extra for the priviledge.
Roger makes a lot of sense!

I can assure you it did save gallons. I used to commute up the M6 and I would regularly be stuck in 2 hour jams each way. That is at least 2 gallons. Now the toll road allows an uninterupted, planet saving journey.
It is also true of toll roads that I have extensively travelled in other countries. Not only time, but safety through lack of tiredness and reduction in polution are all gains. The down side is that the other roads get the traffic that the non-payers take.
By the way I drive a Subaru GTB which is not too good in the planet saving stakes; but it does allow me to enjoy the freedom of a clear road!
Thus my reasoning is not ultruistic; but selfish and pecunary!

Heading south on the M6 to occasionally visit relatives in Rugby, it's a huge relief when I see those toll booths on the M6 toll. I know I am not going to suffer the same fate as all those other poor souls who have to use the Walsall section of the M6 to get to the M5. Well worth the few quid involved.
On another topic, the papers today reported that there had been so many replies...about 1.2 million....to the petition, that the Downing street web-site had crashed.
People power at its best !

My one and only experience of the wonderful M6 toll was not quite so utopian. Travelling north I covered the 26 miles efficiently only to queue for ages just north of the toll plaza (posh word for rip-off!) trying to get to M54.
Presumably though if this wonderful scheme goes ahead then both the new road and the old one would be subject to a toll. So where's the benefit - Oh yes suddenly we have doubled capacity on that bit of Motorway. Is this in reality a subtle way to tempt other enterprising companies to build extra capacity for congested bits of motorway with the dangling carrot of toll fees. Come on Wimpey how about a top deck on the M25 just for Keith's Subaru.
Keith you really ought to get a new Legacy mine does 36mpg!
