Photographs upload.

There's an interesting post in the Pre-war section that has 15!! large photos in it.

1934 Jowett Kestrel for sale

I would be very interested to know how this was done?
I thought we were restricted to 3 per post.

Hi Tony,

It might be because he has embedded them from Photobucket, not from the Gallery.

Either that or it is magic which cannot be explained. Except by Keith. And even after explaining some of us might still not quite understand :)

Hello, Hello!
Listen very carefully.....
Each JowettTalk post is limited to three attachments, which can be a photo or any other file type. If it is an image (jpg or png), a thumbnail (or smaller photo) is created and displayed. Clicking on the thumbnail will display the larger image. Even so, compress images before uploading to 1024 max pixel width as anything bigger is only necessary if detail needs to be seen.

Now you will see when you are posting there are some small boxes just above the large text box you are typing in. Two of these can be used to show an image. The 'Img' will enclose a link to a webfile that must contain an image (jpg or png). JowettTalk will display this image. Once again it is sensible to limit the size of the image to give the detail required. This webfile can be anywhere accessible on the web.
This is a link in the post Tony referred to:

Code: Select all

But please note that if it is not in the JowettGallery it may not be there for posterity. So if it is just a transient requirement say for an advert, then it is fine to do this. But if the image is explaining a technical or historical topic then I would recommend to store in the Gallery. Note that I have spent a lot of time sorting issues out with people who have linked to their 'photobuckets' and websites as images are not always available to others.

The 'Url' box can also enclose a link to an image (or any other webpage for that matter) but JowettTalk will then open a window which displays that page which might contain an image or many images. Thus if you have a gallery of photos on the topic in your post this may be a good way of displaying 15 images! The URL link can, of course, be to a JowettGallery Album. If you want images in the Gallery to be seen by the general public then look at the Help guide!

I will say this ......many times....

You can say it many times, but I am still in the dark on why one post can contain 15 images when the limit is 3 - is it because they are linked from Photobucket? Is it really limited to 3 in one post?

I'm sure I've used more than three images from the Gallery in one post before - indeed the Concours photos from Basingstoke had loads of photos, all of which were from Gallery. Or is this restricted to 3 attachments instead of 3 linked images?

You can have as many links with [Img] or [URL] as you like in a post.

Attachments are stored within the Forum and are limited to 3 per post, so as to limit growth of the forum.

The problem is that attachments are quite unmanageable as they are stored using random numbers in a single folder, not in a structured way like the Gallery. Attachments can not be referenced by others. So, please, store in the Gallery.

I realise it is easier to reference a file as an attachment than to store in the Gallery. It is even easier to reference a file somewhere else on the web. But both these methods do not make the file useful for reference by others or available as archive material in the future.

The latter is the most important point as in 10 years time somebody may want to compile or use a file referenced in JowettTalk to create a document of great value to Jowett enthusiasts.

By storing in the Gallery, files can be easily re-organised and referenced, for instance individual files can be moved into a new album and the album can create an organised document with comments being added by the community in an organised way.

As yet, I have not tackled the problem of archiving or putting off line a selection of topics or posts. Clearly a simple scheme of archiving everything over a year old would 'loose' a great deal of valuable info. The last archive effectively happened when the old JowettTalk was superceeded, but you can still search this old archive and reference it. I used to do such archiving of my work files at work over Christmas, saving those I thought might be useful in future and deleting the others. With storage costs so small these days such effort is not usually worth it. But such large data sets do slow down the system, particularly if the system has to be rebuilt.
