Jowet engine on ebay

Post by BarryCambs »

This ex fire pump engine is currently on ebay, in Deepest Cornwall, but close to my best friend's house, so I could potentially have it collected and stored.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/jowett-car-en ... 2c77dc4cf9

While I would feel a bit guilty breaking a complete engine, I'm not sure what interest it would be without the rest of the pumping unit and I'm worried if no one bids on it, it could end up as scrap. I was wondering what parts would be compatible with my 1934 engine? The inlet manifold, does look the same shape, but would the cylinders or any other parts match? I'd happily donate the mag etc to anyone who wanted them for a restoration or to the club spares scheme.

This is most interesting!

I notice - among other differences - that the exhaust ports face the starting handle end.

Does this mean the cylinders are different to the car ones or simply mounted on the 'opposite' sides?

If so, where does this leave the tappets?

I haven't had time to think this through, but I suspect there might be a problem here!

going off the induction pipe being 2 stud I would thinks its wither 1937, 8 or 9. The 4 stud induction pipe introduced in Sep 1939 for the 1940 model year was, I think fitted to a few late '39 cars - it was certainly fitted to the 8 tested by The Autocar in July 39 .

As to the exhaust flanges facing forwards I suspect that the pots have been put back on the crankcase for the purpose of the photo and the owner has put them on the wrong sides.

As far as I know all the engines produced during ww2 had the 4 stud induction pipe and CA Bradford type of heads.

According to 'the complete jowettt history' in addition to engines supplied to Bristol tractors Jowetts sold 10 in 1937, 71 in 1938 and 561 in 1939

There are photos of similar engine in the stationery engine bit of the forum.

I was going to contact the seller, but for some reason, he has ended the listing. Hopefully it has gone to a good home!
