Oil supply Pipe from oil pump

Post by vicboddy »

As probably everybody knows, (and I have recently discovered...) there are at least two significantly different ways that the top end of the oil supply pipe coming from the pump is fixed to the engine block. In early engines (and at least to castings in the 7000 series), the two fixing bolts are virtually vertical, and in later engines the fixing bolts are nearer to horizontal, meaning that the brass elbow which bolts on to the engine is quite different in the two cases. Mike Allfrey suggests this change is linked to repositioning the oilways to feed non hydaulic cam followers, which of course seems eminently logical.

I am putting together an engine using one of the early sandcast blocks (casting 405). I want to use a late oil pump with a 5/8 delivery pipe diametre, but I dont have one with the 'vertical' adapter. These do exist, but will have been fitted to 'R' or 'RO' or of course 'JUR' engines by the factory when upgrading blocks on reconditioning.

This now all said, DOES ANYONE HAVE A 5/8 diametre supply pipe suitable for an early engine they can sell me?? And no, it is not possible to modify the original fitting.

THANKS! Vic

I did not know that the 5/8 pipe work and elbow from the later engine sets was supplied with the vertical fixings to suit the the earlier engine sets during refurbishment.
When I came across the problem when fitting a MK IV oil pump to the early engine set I made an elbow to suit.
The elbow is silver soldered to the pipe and comes away easy when heat is applied. A one off elbow took me a day to make with the facilities I have. The new elbow was assembled to locate the pipe in the correct position then removed from the engine without disturbing the fit to the pipe and silver soldered. At this stage you can pressure test to ensure the joint is sound.
You then need to assemble again to determine the position and angle of the timing chain lubrication hole and check the new elbow for clearance with the timing chain.
It is possible to make the elbow if you can't obtain one.
