Stripping a gearbox.

Post by ian Howell »

During the ongoing 'repair' programme of my 1930 Long Four I replaced the gearbox input shaft bearing (RMS 8 - a 'real' one) and oil seal, as the bearing was a bit sloppy. (The gearbox has the 'ball' type gear change lever).

However, after having driven about 120 miles I am now VERY unhappy with the noises coming from (presumably) the layshaft, as the noises stop if I press the clutch pedal down and the input shaft stops spinning. Also they are not so obvious when in top gear.

Does anyone know the number of a suitable FULL LENGTH roller bearing to replace the original one (The brass sleeve with two sets of short rollers) in the middle of the input/output shaft assembly?

Any other tips or advice - apart from getting someone else to do the job!

Progress Report

I sourced replacement bearings - REAL RHP originals, not Chinese copies - at very reasonable prices, arrived next day and fitted them to the layshaft.

So far, etc.

Further investigation showed that the little roller bearing between the input and output shafts was also well worn (No noticeable wear on either shaft though) and the clutch spigot bearing was also noisy.

Replacements are under way from the same source, again at sensible prices.

Anyone else in need of a reliable and realistic bearing supplier?
