Also you may like to view this trailer for a similar journey portrayed in a stunning film.
Link to the trailer of the 1999 film “The Straight Story”, the trailer probably does not do full justice to the whole film.
I have seen it - - - - - and it is a beautifully crafted, directed and produced picture; made for the sake of movie-art plus the story rather than just box-office $ returns !!!!!
Well observed writing, and what one could call an expected but heart warming film.
Michael Fishwick is raising money for Alzheimer’s Research.
Mike has been a member of the Jowett Club, North West Section, for many
years. He has attended meetings with his late father Jim in his ex-Roy Braddock Jowett
8 lorry and has regularly taken part with it in the annual London to Brighton Commercial
Vehicle drive. In 2012 and 2013 he won the prize for long distance attendance.
However, for the last 18 months Mike has been restoring his T20 Ferguson
tractor, which had been in the shed for many years. He is going to do the famous drive
from John O’Groat’s to Land’s End around mid-August to raise money for Alzheimer's
Research in memory of his father.
Alzheimer’s Research is financing some really hopeful research and most of us
know of a person or a family affected by one of the forms of dementia. Mike is funding
this project himself. You can support him by making a donation. See http://www.justgiving.com/Michael-Fishwick and follow the link to his webpage ( yes
– Mike with a webpage!!) for information about the route, photos, details of the
restoration and general updates.
If any members would like to join Mike en route – to drive along with, or have
a mini-meet for lunch, this would be a terrific moral booster for him. Contact Kate Jelen
if you would like to do this. Katejelen'at'hotmail.com / ( Tel: 01457 857089).
They were busy through the day with people interested in what they were doing, and showing people the plans they've got.
Great sunny afternoon, met some former members of the club, and a nice day out. Lots of prewar and vintage cars there, with a few more modern cars thrown in.
Don't forget that even if we can't all directly help Michael on his epic journey, we can donate a pound or two to such a good cause to show him we are all right behind him.
Mike is continuing on his way, despite the rotten weather he's been facing. Kate's latest update of his progress:
"Fort Augustus to Tyndrum
After a good breakfast and a donation from the landlady at the B & B, and bidding farewell to his hosts Terry and Elyse, Mike set off again. His journey was delayed briefly at the swing bridge over the Caledonian Canal where traffic was held up for the ships/boats going up the canal. A passer-by popped a donation in the pot.
Down on to Spean Bridge where Mike stopped at the Commando monument to take a photo. (Not yet arrived on my computer.) On through the very busy Fort William and past the great Glen Coe the T20 not missing a beat with dry windy weather until the last few miles to Tyndrum when very heavy rain soaked everything.
Mike was very glad to receive the hospitality of Highland Heritage Hotels at the Royal,Tyndrum, and was thankful to dry out his clothes on the towel rack. There was a coach trip of the Highlands in the hotel and Mike joined them for dinner, being immediately recognised from the TV on Monday.
Another good day and no aches or pains. The Fergie has a small oil leak which Mike will try and solve when he is in Hadfield."
Please do go out and support Mike if he's passing near you - he has only his beard for protection from the elements!
