The out rigger could now be removed along with the poor repairs to the bottom of the D post
WP_20130420_001.jpg
New out rigger trial fitted and providing reference for the D post repair sections - areas that would closed in once all the repairs were completed were shot blasted and shall be treated with a zinc rich paint prior to being closed in.

Hi,

I am really impressed by the quality of the work being done to Peter's car by the 'team'. Well done everyone.

Just one small point, if Peter's car has a chassis number D9/PA/XXXX, then it really isn't a 'Standard', as it has been referred to in previous posts. I have hopefully attached an entry in an early Jowetteer from Harry Brierley, in response to a question on this topic from a club member years ago. Prior to 1950, there was apparently just a single model of Javelin, and the terms 'Standard' and De Luxe' were not really used by the factory until the two models appeared from 1950 onwards, as the article explains.

The consequences for this in 'Concours' judging, may mean that we should have three classes of Javelin?

All the best,

David

Just a small closing panel to make up for the bottom of the rear wing where it joins the D post - once this is complete the out rigger can be attached

Outrigger welded - spot welds were used on the flanges to the bottom of the D post & the sill in order to replicate the factory methods of assembly - a closing section for the front of the outrigger was then made up & welded in

WP_20130511_006.jpg
A small section of the inner wing had rotted out just above the rear upper suspension mounting - water ingress from the rear quarter glass in the rear wing had leaked and run down the inside of the panel and was caught in in well area where the inner panels & mounting meet - in turn the panel had rusted from the inside to the out over a substantial period

Inner sections were fine but the outer skin was quite weak in some sections - unsurprising really it is in direct line of all the crud thrown up off the rear wheel

We are now contemplating if we have time next weekend (bearing in mind that we have an immense list of tasks to complete in order to ensure delivery of the 2013 Basingstoke Rally) to collect the materials, assemble & build a trolley - on to which we mount the bodyshell - this would in turn would give us the ability to get it out of the workshop - (easier said than done) then down the tight access track
IMGP5910.JPG
Here is a previous logistics arrangement in order to get the new lathe & milling machine into the workshop
IMGP5911.JPG
Has you see it is tight for my works 4 x 4 and a small box trailer so I stand no chance of getting the 17' bed car trailer up the track - but with a trolley built on pneumatic tyres it would not be too much of problem - Big question is 'Have we got enough time to sort it' ?? - if we do it's going to make for an interesting exhibit at the rally :D

Chris: -

Just a thought - the empty body shell is relatively light? Might it be possible to put one end on the box trailer and 'hook' the other end on the ball hitch, then tow it to the accessable end of the track and load it onto the 17footer there?

Or even a couple of planks as 'skis' and just drag it?

Ideas are cheap!

Ian - Once the welding repairs are complete the car shall be coming off the chassis tilter - but with the car still axle less whilst the bodywork is prepared and painted - I will need something to sit the bodyshell upon - ideally a trolley that gives flexibility within the workshop - and once Peters car is back on its wheels we have another two Javelin shells to swop about and move - so we might as well just get the trolley built - we will always have a use for it :)

Chris,

just read your build thread.

Congratulations on the thoroughness of your work and thanx for sharing the build with excellent photographic records.

Already several of my future queries have been answered !

Jaycee Jay has reputedly had body / chassis work completed by the PO - I'll check it out before I make any decisions.

I can see why the builder of the 318ci Chrysler powered Javelin went for a new box chassis - simples ! That allows a greater choice of front / rear axles and allows you to make the stance of the car wherever you want it.

That said, the more I look into the OEM build - the more I'm impressed, considering the design era. I especially like the look of the engine design. Interesting.

talking of box tube chassis' - here's one of my designs from the late '70's - The Mongoose '27 Track T. Simple box tube chassis designed to take 300 bhp and using Viva front suspension parts and Volvo rear axle.
