Chassis number sequence

Post by Nick Webster »

I realise this comes close to the "Identification" thread already running, but I thought it sufficiently different to start a new subject. Can anyone explain to me why it is that chassis numbers apparently jump backwards. Ahead of viewing a Javelin this coming weekend I have been doing my homework and trawling through the 1999 vehicle register. I note that there are some cars listed E2 PD 14xxx but later some listed E1 PD 19xxx. If the first two digits reference the year how can later numbers be assigned to an earlier year? I am aware that some cars went back to the factory and were remodelled to deluxe spec, but I did not think this meant a new chassis number was assigned. I think these "returned cars" have been discussed before, but an extensive search of the forum has failed to turn up this thread. Grateful if someone might direct me to such a discussion if it exists. Possible also though, that this has nothing to do with the number sequence.
