Useful stats from Youtube - the video that the QR code linked to on the car has now been viewed by people in the following countries, in descending order:

The UK
Denmark
Finland
Australia
Canada
Belgium
Germany
Estonia
The US
Lithuania

So using these codes works - most of the traffic was a direct link, i.e. from the QR code (unless they typed in a huge long address to find it that we haven't told anybody about!)

Jack.

Finnish publicity

Post by Keith Clements »

Hello Keith

and Thank You for yr nice and interesting report. I would certainly wish that we could use it in our magazine. I find that in Finland people do not dare to do such long trips with their oldies. I think this would be something different for them to read and think about. I also had a quick look at the link where there were a lot of really good pictures (photoes). Certainly a story worth while telling from many points of view!
Good that you had contcted these people in Latvia and Estonia. I knew they would be the ones who would be able to help you.
For me it was a surpise that you came first to Sweden and Finland and then went down to the Baltic states. I thougt it would be quite the opposite. But I must say that the whole summer has been so hectic that it is no wonder if I have missed some points. So sorry also missing yr entourage. Could have at laeast come to see you at the harbour, but like I said it has been such a summer that half of the time I haven't known if I'm coming (from a trip) or if I'm just embarking on a new one (and also literally embarking because I've been to Estonia, Latvia and Sweden as well) and most of them having to do with work (which of course doesn't mean that it would be unpleasant. It has just been so much this summer.)

Let me have a look at the aricle with some more time and I'll get back to you with my thoughts.
Thank you again for sending me the report and also nice to hear that you are safe and sound back home.

Yours truly

Riitta

1271 pictures

Post by Forumadmin »

I know we saw a lot but I have just filed into the 21 days of our trip 1271 pictures from my mobile, my camera, Scott's camera and some from Richard van Buul and Maikki Hihnala.
As we went along we did post some selected pictures in the Gallery but these were quite disorganised. I will start to make them more organised.

Whilst some are only our memories, others will be of interest as there are tons of unusual cars featured and lots of workshops of some very gifted car restorers. There are also some great pictures of the Jup in many diffrent settings.

Something for me to do in these winter nights.

Gallery updated.

Post by Forumadmin »

I have updated the Gallery albums from Helsinki to Poland, making sub-albums for the workshops and car collections we saw. This was the most interesting part so I did it first.
Perhaps Scott will add some comments!!!!
Enjoy....

The other days of our trip will be updated shortly.

Rearranging the Gallery

Post by Forumadmin »

The Baltic Tour Album is being rearranged but the joys of the Gallery means that things should still be found when they are referenced in the Forum. Except when I have deleted an album. Please tell me of any problems.

Just done is TOPIC Day 9 Tampere the TOPIC Naantali workshop where Jorma's braddie was rebuilt. the TOPIC Vehoniemi museum, TOPIC Jouko\'s Jup and an TOPIC amazing car badge collection.
TOPIC Day 10 the delightful sea cruise. Heaven and relaxation.
TOPIC Day 11 The cruise back and drive to Helsinki.

Last night TOPIC Day 12 Helsinki and Tallin was completed with the Olympic Stadium, TOPIC the Russian Prison and TOPIC Maart Aarne\'s great workshop, should make viewing interesting.
Also completed were TOPIC Day 13 to Parnu and TOPIC the Audru Ring,
TOPIC Day 14 to Riga with the TOPIC Hannus car collection and the amazing TOPIC Rode workshop,
and TOPIC Day 15 to Vilniuswith the great TOPIC Riga museum, and the stunning TOPIC Stasys Brunza car collection.

Enjoy. More to come.
If you have any questions I hope Scott with his encyclopedic knowledge can answer them. Please comment under the item in the Gallery.
Or post here but with a reference.

The last photos have been uploaded so if you want to give yourself a slidehow to send you to sleep you can. Whilst we may find time to annotate some of them, it is probably easier if you pose a question as a comment below the photo. We can then answer.

There really are some great cars on show in the museums and collections which you can view. If you can name a small percentage you are doing well. The Jupiters of Claude Bernard, Jack Jacobs and Jouko Tulppo are also featured as well as the collection in Faaborg.

A synopsis

Post by Forumadmin »

I have put together a brief collection of memories from the trip but starting with some of the reasons why the trip came about. It focusses on the club spirit that supported me on this trip and throughout the 43 years I have had the SA.

I was just searching through some of the memorabilia and came across a booklet that Andrejs Rodes gave me. It is a a well presented collection of his cars and his wife's, Edite, artwork.

Click on the pictures and you will get a slide show. Fabulous cars.

Also try

Anderjs and his son, Robert, were having trouble with the regulator on a russian copy of an Auto Union. They are trying to convert it to 12v from 6v . They had tried a DVR3-P from http://www.dynamoregulators.com/. I suggested they needed a 6v regulator and then a 6-12 inverter. Anybody know if anybody does one?

Epitaph

Post by Keith Clements »

Well it is not really an Epitaph..but I do need to get the car mobile again for the Basingstoke weekend.

A few weeks ago I had tried starting the SA and it would not start. Eventually traced last week to a faulty electronic ignition module. So having avoided buying a replacement Lumenition for £150 I settled on a local firm Accuspark. I had already bought one of these for the early DM2 on Peter's car and went back to get a new kit which was universal for both late and early DM2s (discount for cash, or was it?). Anyhow eventually I figured this unit was faulty and will take it back tomorrow. So instead of firing up the car on electronic ignition I reverted to the trusty points type in the rally spares. Note the belt and braces of the rally kit. Electronic systems are sensitive to electronic spikes cause by faulty plug leads or even alternator or regulator malfunctions, so a traditional system is good if you are miles from home.

The engine did start; but was not running very well , so that is for future investigation as I did not want to gas the other workers in the garage. No exhaust extraction facility yet!!!

Today having been stalled on the ignition front I transferred my attention to the water pump that was making a noise and had started leaking in southern Germany. As you read elsewhere, this was not a happy sight and a new water pump had to be built up.

Since the fan support was out, Chris and I decided to make up two new ones as the one in the SA had been repaired a couple of times and (on Drummond's suggestion) we will fit a Jup support to the Javelin pump that he is making for Peter.

Whilst this was going on I was advising Jack on how to take the engine and gearbox out of the Javelin (Benjamin). This he completed, taking a short break to watch England beat Italy. The main reason for removing the engine was to fix the steering box bracket fracture, so that meant take the steering box out as well. Of course other things to do were discovered by Jack. So we now have three cars on the go. Who said men cannot multi-task?

One of my tasks this week is to thoroughly check the oil filter housing on the Javelin for cracks as it is leaking; but I may also do the Jup as it has a slight leak. Both were an early attempt at the O ring mod and this may have failed causing the leak. I now have the updated kit from Mr Morris so it will be used.

Water pump and stuck valve

Post by Forumadmin »

This is the failed impellor after dismantling.
The broken bit pushed the shaft back and caused a leak into the bearing which also failed loosing a couple of balls.

The reconditioned pump is now installed.

On starting the SA it was very rough. Worried I tried to find my compression tester that had been used on Jack's Bedford. Not to be found I ordered a new one. This arrived but failed to work. But it was obvious there was no compression. Removal of the tappet cover showed a stuck valve.
Notice the 1cm gap between rocker and valve stem!

Inspection with the endoscope showed no damage to valve or piston.

That is the exhaust valve head you can see on the screen.
Grabbing the valve spring retainer with curved Mole grips and turning released the valve. On starting up all was well.
