Hampshire Days Out (or, Places to explore in a Jowett)

Post by Amy »

One snowy February weekend, Sharon McCormack and Amy Clements (that's me! :)) took it upon themselves to acquaint themselves with some of Hampshire's well-known attractions, as well as some of its lesser-known gems.

The location
Glorious Hampshire, in the area around the Rally site. A touch of imagination was required to picture the locations in Spring sunshine (which the Rally Committee have ordered for May 25 - 27), as it was snowing during our visit, but hopefully we won't be having any snow in late May....

The mission?
To find lots of lovely things which will appeal to our fellow Jowetteers, be they young or old, confirmed grease monkey or lover of the finer things in life.

We have put together here some information on day trips from Basingstoke. Each is about a 20 mile drive each way, mainly on nice country A or B roads. We are not suggesting a route, nor a day on which you do this; you could choose to come down to Hampshire early and fill up your Thursday and Friday, occupy some time during the weekend between Rally activities, or maybe you fancy extending your stay and want inspiration for some bank holiday Monday fun. Any of the destinations is easily reached from both Milestones and the Hampshire Court hotel.

All of this information, with lots more detail, will be included in your rally packs; if you have any questions, please do send me an email (address in the membership list) or a PM.

Amy.

Steaming along!

Post by Amy »

The first of our routes, and one which we thoroughly recommend to all, is a steam adventure on the Watercress line.

Reached via a picturesque route through gentle Hampshire countryside, around 20 miles from Basingstoke, the Georgian town of Alresford is at one end of the delightful Watercress Line steam railway. Sharon and Amy spent some time talking to the incredibly helpful and knowledgeable staff about the steam train and its service. A timetable can be found here: http://www.watercressline.co.uk/Your-Visit/Timetable

Chuffing marvellous!

The line is running a standard service on both Saturday and Sunday, and a special rate will be provided - details will be in your Rally packs. Any Peppa Pig fans may want to wait until the Monday when the railway is holding a special Meet Peppa event. We recommend driving to Alresford in your Jowett and parking at the station; those arriving before 10.30 should be able to park right outside the station entrance, and your pride and joy will be in prime place to be admired by all visitors to the railway. You will then be in plenty of time to take the 11am train.

A trip to Alton and back (without disembarking) will take approximately an hour and a half. Alton station is some way out of town and so this is not recommended as a stop for those short of legpower.

In Alresford itself, Alresford station is a short 2 minute walk from the town centre, where a variety of shopping and eating opportunities await the spendthrift and hungry.

Eateries coming highly recommended from the station staff are the Bell pub near the station (directly opposite you as you walk down the road from the station into the town centre), and the Globe pub at bottom of hill, a walk to which will take you about 10 minutes and was billed as being more expensive but nice and has lovely views over the water. If your taste is rather sweeter, the Swiss Patisserie on the corner of the road down from the station should be just the ticket.

Amy and Sharon can thoroughly commend Dave's fish and chips if you want a snack rather than a full meal (turn left at the bottom of the road from the station) - chips like they should be! The cod chunks were rather good too...

The town itself is very pretty and has lots of gift and craft type shops as well as a gallery and bookshop. Further details about the town can be found on its website http://www.alresford.org which has details of shops, cafes and walks around the town amongst other things.

Silky smooth (just like a Jowett engine...)

Post by Amy »

Our second suggestion comes out of our foray to Whitchurch, and its lovely working silk mill. The Mill dates back to the early 19th century and is still a working mill today, producing a wide range of beautiful and delicate fabrics.

The Mill is open 10.30 - 5pm (last entry 4.15pm). The tour around the mill allows you to see the workings of the water wheel which powers the machinery and all stages of the weaving process. There is a dressing up box with costumes for children, and a nice cafe upstairs.

The Mill is accessible to both buggies and wheelchairs, with a stairlift for those who need it. http://whitchurchsilkmill.org.uk/mill/index.php. There is a free public car park next to silk mill.

En route to Whitchurch there are many opportunities for a short (or long!) stop and a bit of exploration.

Between Oakley and Basingstoke is Manydown Farm which has a farm shop and seasonal activities for all the family - see http://www.manydownfamilyfun.co.uk for details of activities over the Bank Holiday weekend. There is catering on site, with a BBQ Marquee and a farm shop selling all manner of locally produced goodies. At the same site is Little Barn gift shop.

This is signposted in both directions as "farm shop and fitness centre", a brown road sign is visible from both Basingstoke and Whitchurch directions. The farm shop has all manner of goodies including a great butcher and cheese counter, loads of chutneys, locally grown vegetables. They also sell ready made pies, but there is no cafe area in the shop itself. We thoroughly recommend a visit to the farm shop - a leg of local lamb and locally grown veggies were sampled by the Clements/Moon/Spencer-McCormack contingent and get the definite thumbs up. The gift shop at the site also had all kinds of things to browse.

Eating:
For a pub lunch, there is a Fullers Pub, The Fox in Newfound: http://www.foxnewfound.co.uk for opening hours and food service details. Alternatively, and coming recommended by the staff at the Silk Mill, is the Plough Inn at Longparish (http://www.theploughinn.info) which is in lovely countryside, with walks nearby.

For those in need of a treat, the Oakley Hall Hotel is on the B3400 between Basingstoke and Whitchurch. It is set back from the road with a wonderful view over the surrounding countryside and serves an a la carte lunch, or there is the option of afternoon tea with freshly homebaked goodies (note that tea needs to be booked in advance so that the chef knows how many scones to bake!). We have agreed with the hotel that Jowetts can park directly in front of hotel entrance which will create a beautiful photograph. The hotel has extensive gardens, with a woodland walk with sunken Victorian wall - the walk is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.

The hotel is signposted in both directions on B3400 with brown signs. Big blue Oakley Hall sign on main gate. 4 miles from Milestones. Note that there are speedbumps on way in up the hotel drive, but these are shallow ones which should be fine for Jowetts.

Take tea in Oakley's beautiful library

In Overton, the Red Lion is approximately half way between Whitchurch and Basingstoke. The car park is on the left as you go in to village coming back from Whitchurch; it has15 car park spaces, and a good seating area inside, with a good lunch menu with meals under ten pounds. http://www.redlion-overton.co.uk.
