Jowett bumpers
The poor old bumpers on my 14000-series Javelin (therefore early type ones) are past their best, and may be beyond re-chroming. I wonder if anyone knows of a company thet re manufactures bumpers? Looking on t'interweb there seems to be an outfit in Vietnam that remanufactures classic bumpers in stainless steel, though I doubt it would be economical for a short production run. JOAC had some Jupiter ones made some years ago, but I don't know where they were made. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Jowett bumpers
Bill Lock informs me that the MGA rear bumper is the same size bumper cross section - but will not fit the Javelin as it is too short - however - the way around this is to obtain two MGA rear bumpers and use one for the centre section and the other provides the corners - they then have to be carefully aligned and welded together before sending for rechroming - a new rear bumper for the MGA through Moss Europe is £88.96 so x 2 + postage + welding / fabrication + rechcroming will not leave much change out of £350 / £400 - maybe it is time that we found what a small production run would cost ?

Re: Jowett bumpers
I think several of the older BLMC cars such as Wolsey Riley and MG saloon bumpers are a quite near fit with the correct section so cutting and welding is an option but also do not forget there are two types of bumper needed for the Javelin as the Deluxe is different from the standard model.
Somewhere in the west midlands there must be the correct roller tooling for these jobs.
I used a big Healey bumper which actually fitted the Abbott and you can still buy the over-riders, but the Abbott is slightly wider than a SA.
On the Delux Javelin the numberplate mount covers any welding you need to do

Hi Geoff, there are about 5 days left to email a 'wanted' advert to Hon. Ed. for inclusion in March's Jowetteer.Geoff wrote:The poor old bumpers....are past their best. Ideas anyone?
There must be some reasonable ones out there somewhere.
Tony.

Thanks Tony, but I'm fancying some new ones (posh kid - me!). I spoke to Ian at JCS about remanufacture, but I don't think anything came of it. Maybe I'll mention it again.

Re: Jowett bumpers
Try the Australian club or New Zealand club, someone would have at least bumpers that can be refinished . The postage would be cheaper than remanufacture, & save more parts going to landfill.
Or try Horipito wreckers New Zealand of Flynns Cooma Australia both deal in cars this age Flynns would be less rusty.

Good memories of Bradfords.

Re: Jowett bumpers
Looking on a longer term basis for these which shall only become more rare as the second hand source (which is already scant) drys up - I think we should continue to look for a source of remaking these - I am pretty sure that a small fabrication shop would make up a small batch which we could then have chromed - this is only for the early cars - there appears to be a ready supply of the late model bumpers which are straight but they may require rechroming - I will bring the subject up with JCS at the next exec committee (9th March)
Another route maybe that if the radius ends on your old bumper can be cut off and reshaped / reworked to go again we could have the straight centre section folded / made up in new steel and then weld the radius ends on to the new section - a simple jig could be made to help with this - once cleaned up the bumper could be sent for chroming - for now retain all bent / battered & rusty bumpers and let's see if we can find a way forward

Re: Jowett bumpers
Also, Chris, Overriders are becoming a bit battered, though these could perhaps be sourced from another car. Next time there's a classic car meet in the area, I'll do a bit of snooping with a tape measure. Hope I don't get arrested

Re: Jowett bumpers
Geoff - I know that Bill Lock has several decent ones but they require chroming - I have a choice of six for Peters car all in various states of repair - I can repair the ones that are not too bad by cutting out the mounting plate and undertaking the repairs / reworking once I have clear access to the rear of the overrider - then reweld the bracket back on prior to sending for rechroming - any small nicks dents can be made good or even filled with a little braze then carefully reworked to shape - the bracket would be better welded by tig to keep any distortion to a minimum - but I am keen to ensure that we have a way forward to produce such things rather than just accept that parts like this are unavailable - We have many behind the scenes ideas in the pipeline - including an exchange panel service - we take your old door / wing etc and supply you a refurbished one in exchange or refurb the the original and would include bare metaling the panel / making good any rot / rust or accident damage - and returning the panel in primer.
Thanks to JCS we now have quite a good supply of the mechanial parts to maintain the cars on the road - but there is also the argument that if someone is going spend all the time / effort & money in sorting the oily bits - why should they put up with trim parts / panels / bumpers / door handles etc that make car look down at heal ? - My wife (Sharon) is currently working on a retrimmed seat idea for the Javelin on a exchange basis (she already has KC's front seat 75% completed) - we shall also have headlinings available from the orginal pattern available shortly - so lots going off in background - we can't do it all by ourselves so the more members that get involved - the better
