What is interesting to me is the number of things which are potentially and in some cases already dangerous. And yet this car passed the NZ WOF in 2010 from memory.

It is my understanding that the WOF is a much stricter test than the MOT, with more detailed checks and held up as a standard to which other testing schemes should aspire - obviously there are some things which are slipping the net for whatever reason.

Reassuring for Peter will be knowing that his car has been completely checked and any issues sorted, another reason for restoring your own car so you know what has been done, those buying cars that cosmetically appear very sound, as this car did, may find similar problems in future.

I quite like the idea of a copper car brazed together though - we must have enough spare bits of copper in Keith's plumbing kit to make up at least a small vehicle :) We might have to use 22mm pipe for the rollbar.

This is either an argument for the MOT being pointless, because a garage couldn't possibly find a lot of the critical stuff in the time available for a £50 test, or a much more rigorous test every X years where key areas are checked in much more detail.

I am not sure, but think that the glovebox lid is home-made. It could be factory, but the way it fits with the moulding of the dashboard just doesn't seem right when held up against a standard lid - the reinforcement webbing, knob and hinge design on a standard lid are a million miles away from the one on the car. The knob and closing mechanism used appears to be a bit too home-made to be factory, but it is possible I suppose.

And it passed the strict Swiss Government MOT this year...... :?: but it did come all the way from Arbon to Llandridnod Wells, albeit with a few bangs and crashes on the French roads. You have yet to learn of the wiring defects and other mechanical defects that have been unearthed. Please note that Chris and I and probaly any knowledgeable person could go to almost any car and find something 'wrong'. Every time we view the Javelin (XMG) on the lift we find something, everytime I take the SA (NKD) out we find something, even the SC (TTD) has a few outstanding problems. Perfection is unattainable , or very costly!
I spoke to an ex Jowett employee who worked in the testing department at the end of the line. Apparently more man hours were spent fixing the car than making it!

Work and the festive season has prevented progress being posted - that is not to say that things have not been happening
IMGP4619.JPG
Along with the gear selection shaft, steering column & sundry parts - some in really good condition but others in a poor state of repair

The wiring harness was threaded back through and removed

Dashboard instuments were removed and packed for safe keeping
IMGP4644.JPG
Care was taken to remove the bulkhead sound deadening - a little fragile but will go again
IMGP4657.JPG
The car was clearly a NZ export model from new - No heater !!

The small details on the model would have put it well ahead of the market in it's day

The offside front torsion bar came out with little effort
IMGP4673.JPG
The nearside front was a very different story - the nuts kept stripping on the puller and the bolt had seen better days - I built a new tool in order to hold a long stainless steel drift in place but despite some serious blows from a sledge hammer the torsion bar would not budge

After several hours of warming either end of the mounting sockets where the bar locates and getting no where I contemplated obtaining an hydraulic jaw to force the front suspension arm forwards - this could only fit in one place - where the main chassis rail terminates against the bulkhead - but before I returned home I thought with the remaining suspension now removed that I might just try a few dead blows with the sledge hammer on the front suspension arm - 3 blows later and it departed from the rear mounting - I still have to get the trosion bar to seperate from the suspension arm but this can be done off the car

Not too much to remove now, the complex for the day steering drag link was removed
IMGP4676.JPG
It leaves a few bits of offside suspension to remove along with the steering box and a few odds on the bulkhead and we will have a bare bodyshell

Peter should be landing in the UK as I write so a few days of intensive works are planned

Now the hard work starts (well any idiot can unbolt things from a car) - the skill lays in the body & paintwork, mechanical rebuilding & reassembly - even when this is done - if the car is not reassembled with care & time the effort taken to undertake the previously listed tasks is wasted - Here goes :D
IMGP4775.JPG
IMGP4781.JPG
The front chassis tilter was then removed to allow access for welding repairs - the tilter had utilised the bumper iron for a mounting point which now required removal for repairs access
IMGP4784.JPG
Not too visable in the latter image are the previously attempted poor welding repairs & over patching
