See photos of Javelin available for removal due to imminent sale of house in Feltham , Middlesex .

We think the car is complete with other parts in the the garage.

Just back from a long afternoon and evening of very dirty work, and a very late takeaway!

I can confirm it was some challenge even for parts - it took us 2 hours to get across London to visit the car today to get a look at the state of things, and it is a long way gone.

Very rusty on every panel, particularly the roof, bonnet and most doors shot. Rear wheels wouldn't turn, engine wouldn't turn by hand, and generally the car wasn't an economical or even viable restoration due to the state of things. The chassis seemed reasonably solid in places, but that was about it really.

The garage was pretty tight for space, and had evidently been left for a long time and various creatures came out of hiding while we worked, but we managed to get various useful parts from the car to help with other restorations - the engine and gearbox came out once the radiator was out (completely clogged with mud, but recoreable I guess) the gear change column was removed to be refurbished by the Scottish Section, the steering wheel and gear change knobs were in remarkably good condition, and the front grille was a marked improvement on Peter's current grille.

So all in all worth making the trip, unfortunately not to save a car but it may save us some time with other cars, and finding some of the parts for a Standard was a turn up for the books.

We may be back there at the weekend to finish the job, and then I think this one is off to the scrapyard unfortunately. We have the various plates and numbers from the car, and photos to be uploaded at some point soon.

Just the idea of getting in to that lot is off putting--- congrats on the effort!

As it happens I am looking for a better steering wheel for my E2PD 1952 delux. The one I have is rather flexible and bound with cord which I am reluctant to remove in case it falls apart. Not too concerned about the colour --car is black . I assume mine is a splined fitting whereas I think some early ones had a key way. If it looks good I would be interested, pics ? No hurry of course.

If it is a key way it may be quite rare as would the column?

Hi Bob,

The steering wheel is quite good, but is yellow, and is a keyway type. I don't think we've got enough wheels to be able to easily help, if anything we need another one too!

We are going back on Sunday to see about removing the last few parts, the steering column is proving difficult because access to the drivers side of the car is very difficult.

Robert, If I had known you wanted a steering wheel I could have brought it to the rally! I have a spare black splined wheel, not brilliant but not held together by cord! My 1952 PD Javelin has the earlier keyed wheel. I am in Runcorn, Cheshire so if you can think of some way I can get it to you without the cost of postage, please let me know!

I shall be in Blackpool all this week with work. I shall be passing close to Runcorn on my return, which could get it as far as Herts...

I'll give Amy a nudge to get in touch, but suspect she will be going up the M6 tomorrow, and returning at the end of the week. I am sure service station would be much easier than a detour - part of a 4hr journey back to Herts.

I agree, a service station meet up would be a lot easier. If I gave Amy directions to Runcorn you might never see her again! Not that the natives are unfriendly but we do have a road system which confuses newcomers!

Paul , Thanks for your kind intervention on this . I can easily visit Runcorn in the course of going to Manchester which I do occasionally, is it 01298 569374 as in the list.?

I did not attend the annual so no harm done !

I had assumed mine is splined since it is E2PD 22752 quite a late one , I see yours is 20229, so the change over could have been in between. Anything is possible with Jowetts!

I will investigate to be sure, and call you when I am making a trip if that is OK with you , Thanks and best wishes Bob

Hello Robert. That is okay with me. I have 'dug' the wheel out from the back of the garage and can confirm it is black for a splined not a keyed shaft. It is not pristine condition but it will probably be better than yours from your description.
However, I thought Amy was picking it up for you on Friday on her way home from Blackpool. Is that not the case now?

Paul , In my copy of Jowett Technical Information Item 100 issued in July 1952 it says the splined steering wheel was introduced from Eng No E2PD 20881 D and 21838 S so mine is definitely splined (22752). Very useful book to have .
