Re: getting hot
Have a listen with a tube in your ear around the carb to head joint and make sure there are no sucking noises. Also check around the carb to oil filler pipe. I had a hole in one pipe that caused weak mixture.

Use a spray of either engine start or bettwe still a small pen LPG torch....it gets sucked in and rpms increase.

Re: getting hot
Often the engine is not running smoothly with a leak anyway, so using an inflammable substance is also unreliable. I have found the tube method useful on Jowett engines for both inlet and exhaust leaks, and for locating mechanical noises. You can locate to within a few millimeters.

Re: getting hot
mechanical noises ..mechanics stethoscope..they are cheap and designed to do the job...after using tubes and the old big screw drive methods u will neve go back to them... And a LPG pen is standed tool in any tool box.... and very reliable.

Re: getting hot
Search on http://jowett.org/search.htm for 'overheating' on both jowett.org and then jowett.net, you will see contributions on the old JowettTalk from 2006 as well as many other comments and articles.
Having spoken at length with PP tonight I do not think there is much wrong. Rhowina indicates 100C after a 5 mile hill with ambient at 25C. This is with no oil cooler. This, I think, is about what can be expected from a standard Jav. It is not boiling or loosing water. I suggested many mods that might help. In UK we do not have a 5 mile hill! On the Marathons we did do many of these long hill climbs competitively with a variety of Javs and Jups. I do not think any of our cars suffered badly, although we probably ignored the temp gauge!
Anyhow reconditioned rad and water pump are on order to be fitted when the car comes over here in May for a holiday in the Clements' fitness and beauty club for Jowetts.
