JOWETT 7hp sunroof and leaking cilinder head

Post by MartinRaine »

Hi can any one help me i have rebuilt the sunroof but i don't have the guides that fit to the sunroof they should be 2 on the front and 2 for the back. Do any of you have any pictures or drawings so i can make some, or better still any for sale. Also on the very front corners of the sun roof are they rounded or square.
Now for the cylinder head i have leak but only a very small drip from the gasket. I have now fitted a different head but it still leaks and i also have fitted 3 different head gaskets. i have used blue halamar, and a additive to the water to sop the leak. Have any one had the same problem, and what do you all recommend. Thanks again Martin Raine.

Hi Martin! Do you mean the sunroof runners or the fixings at each corner of the sliding bit which slide on the runners? I have had similar problems in the past with leaking head gaskets, however, I think the seepage was only ever external and not into the bores and eventually dried up with usage. I have to add that since fitting original Payen gaskets obtained at Beaulieu I never had any such problems, and I didn't even use hylomar!

Hi the runners on the car are OK, it is the sunroof sliders the ones on each corner of the sunroof that i have no idea what they should look like. Thanks for the info on the cylinder head i will try running it a bit longer. Thanks Martin.

Does that mean you don't have the locking mechanism either? Incidentally, the corners of the sunroof opening should be square, not rounded which makes life a bit easier!

I don’t have any running gear, locking gear and what ever else. Therefore I covered the whole roof with a sheet of plywood. It has been like that for 20 years. No water gets in from the roof! I would like a sun roof so if you could produce some good photos and detailed drawings I might be able to reinstall it. However I do have a few doubts. Sun roofs leak!! The water gets into the roof lining and rots it, soaks into the wood frame and rots it, as that rusts the metal as well.

With regards to your cylinder head gasket I agree with Ken. I was always told to soak the gasket in water before fitting. This enables the asbestos to compress easier when tightening the heads down. You do need to tighten down, well at least check that they are still tight, when you have run it for some time.

Hi i have all the locking mechanisms, the only parts that i am missing is the 4 sliders that fit onto the sunroof itself, can any one take a picture, or do a drawing of them for me,I think they look like solid window channel with felt in them. I also need a starting handle motive that fits into the radiator, to cover the starting handle hole dose any one have a spare??. Thanks Martin
