St George's Day near Nottingham

Post by Forumadmin »

This is a request for a Jowett to attend this celebration. Please email the rquestor if you are interested.

The purpose of the day is to have a good time, and to re-discover the fun
of St George's Day which has fallen out of fashion over the past few years for
many reasons. There is a great deal of feeling in Bramcote, and surrounding
areas, of "stuff the nay-sayers, let's have some gentle fun".

Other attractions will hopefully include a Cavalier and a Roundhead from the sealed
knot, demonstration bell-ringing, prayers / liturgy from the Medieval English
mystics, some seriously good food, traditional English games, the local history
group, and anything else I can get together in a very short time (eg
Scalextric, wargaming challenges, model railway, etc).

It is going to be non-political in that we're not having any political parties allowed, of any
variety, but there is a certain resentment at not being allowed to be English,
and that the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish can all celebrate being what they
are. There's also concern at St Patrick's Day being hijacked for anti-social
drinking. We, as a church, would like to politely and gently remind people
that the English have a varied and interesting culture, lots of history, a
cuisine, and people can have fun without being excessive.

Hope this sounds suitably enticing, and I'm now getting off the computer after several hours and
going to try and have a life outside of event organising.

St Michael's Church, Bramcote, Nottingham (western edge,
A52, near J26, M1) are having a St George's Day event on Saturday, April 23rd,
which is also Easter Saturday. Is there a local member who could bring a car
to our event ? We can feed and water the owner via Jonathon our professioanlly
trained cook, what other expenses, eg petrol, would the owner require ?

Roger Lincoln.
